Human trafficking has been happening around the globe for
many years and according to the National Human
Trafficking Hotline, from 2007 to June 2017 943 human trafficking cases
have been reported in Michigan. 136 of those cases were reported this year.
Trafficking is a modern slavery that often involves a person
being taken unwillingly or held captive with minimum food, labor with no pay,
and sometimes sexual abuse.
From the 136 cases actually reported in Michigan: 120 of
those victims were females, 14 were male and less than 3 were gender
minorities.
The most likely type of trafficking found was sex
trafficking, with 109 cases, which sounds very accurate being that Michigan
was ranked number two in the nation for human trafficking sex trade in
2015.
Which led to Gov. Snyder appointing a deputy to lead a fight
against human trafficking.
Human trafficking cases has increased over the years,
reaching a peak point of 249 in 2016, but since then has decreased according to
statistics as current as June 30, 2017.
Awareness and education may be key reasons to why there may
be a decline. According to United
Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, having knowledge of trafficking is the
best way to beat the odds and perpetrator.
